FC-Test Results

Website: FC-Test

Our FC-Test benchmark is split into three parts. First is a write test involving the creation of a file pattern similar to common files such as MP3s or large video files. Once created on the drive, we then copy the file pattern from the drive back to a different folder on the same drive producing a combined read/write test. Finally we test the read speed of the drive by performing FC-Test's read test of the the files copied.

For our benchmarks, we're using both the MP3 pattern, consisting of two hundred and seventy small files totalling 0.99GB, and the the ISO pattern, consisting of three large files totalling 1.6GB in size. We feel these file patterns represent the most common files people will be frequently copying to and from an drive, and can be interpreted as as close to a real world file transfer test as possible.

Write performance for FC-Test's ISO pattern for the Seagate 1.5TB is very good, with the drive writing the three large files in almost the exact same time as the nippy Samsung 1TB drive.

Simultaneous read/write of these large files again showed excellent performance, with the 1.5TB able to slightly better the Samsung 1TB's result and resoundingly crushing the Seagate 1TB's time.

We were astounded just how much faster the Seagate 1.5TB was in comparison to the competition when reading FC-Test's ISO file pattern. Not only is it a clear 1.5 seconds faster than the Samsung F1 1TB, but it's only a little slower than the "affordable" SSDs from G.Skill and Patriot - awesome! It's clear that with the fewer read/write commands of the larger file pattern the Seagate 1.5TB is much less affected by its slower response time, allowing the high data density of the platters to visibly boost performance.
